But when we bear witness, we encounter silence” (2005, p. DEPRESSION AND THE NECESSITY FOR DISCLOSURE: "IF I TELL SOMEONE MY LIFE STORY, THAT DEFINITELY IS PART OF IT." Cyrulnik says, “When we keep silent, we die even more.I will end with the social narratives that unfortunately infiltrate the self-narratives of older adults. I will then turn to the forces that can sour or desiccate the self-narratives of later life and the work needed to counter them. I will turn to the role that psychotherapy can play in promoting this integration and provide a clinical example. In this chapter, I will first look at the value of self-narrative in later life and the importance of integrating relational and emotional meaning into the self-narrative. It is particularly important in older age when a summing up of one’s life becomes a way of making meaning as one faces its ending. Self-narrative is an important component of an individual’s identity and well-being. A long life is seen as a whole and a story about this life can be told - to others or to the self. Most important are the stories they tell about themselves. In addition, they compose their own every day. Amid the heaps of clothing and spices, there were barbers cutting customers’ hair, dental entrepreneurs with what looked like instruments of torture offering to pull teeth, and an old man on a chair surrounded by a large, rapt crowd telling a story. I remember a square in Morocco piled with merchandise on rugs.
